~Refinishing your Deck~

Wooden Decks look great.. But need to be maintained from time to time.

First of all you’ll need to prep your deck. There are 2 ways ..first of all, if your deck is only a year or 2 old, you will probably only need to clean your deck before you start to finish it..remember if you wash your deck down you will need to wait 2 or 3 days for it to dry before staining.

Secondly if your deck is older you may need to replace some rotten board and rail before you start. Then sand the deck and rails back to the wood..you can then stain right away.

You now need to choose the type of finish you would like.

Transparent ;- slight colour to wood allowing wood grains to show through
Semi-Transparent ;- slightly thicker product which means less grain is visable, but will protect the wood a little more.
These finishes usually require a finish clear coat to protect from U.V rays. (this clear coat can be re done in 2 or 3 years.

Semi -Solid ;-very little wood grain will show through, but you will see the texture of the wood.
Solid ;- totally covers the wood grain but you will still the wood texture.(these finishes do not require a clear coat finish as the U.V protection is built in)

Not only do these waterborne stains add life to your deck, they come into a wonderful choice of colour.

Magnetic paints

Do you have a home office? Fed up with thumb tacks on you walls? Why not try magnetic paint is easy. It's easy to apply to your walls. Simply paint 2 coat of magnetic paint to your walls let it dry, then using the colour and paint of your choice paint over the magnetic area. It's as simple as that. You do not have to ...paint an entire wall, you might only need to paint a section of wall by your deck or simply the back of a flat door.

Magnetic paints are often used in children’s rooms. Your child can display decorative magnets, hang drawings and pictures, and use magnets to display anything he or she desires on the wall.
This same approach can be used in a kitchen or fam...ily room., this area can be used as a message center for the family. Magnets can be used to display pictures and drawings and notes. The board is often considered to be a better option than purchasing a message board that is hung on the wall using adhesive strips or nails and it is not obtrusive.

Whiteboard paint

Whiteboard paint is the versatile product that can be used in several different ways. The Whiteboard paint gives you a chance to express your ideas in the most cost effective of manners.
The Whiteboard paint is great to use in the meeting rooms, boardrooms, hospitals and any where in the house too.

It is easy to apply and quick to dry.
hard finish that creates a unique white write able-erasable surface. Once dry, simply use any dry erase markers to draw or write messages and then erase! Application is easy and it has minimal odor making it safe to use indoors. Ideal for use on interior surfaces such as drywall,

Simply apply Dry Erase paint to an area near your phone, computer or anywhere else to keep you and your family organized!
Paint dry erase anywhere you want to express your creativity, like chalkboard paint, but you get to skip the dusty mess of chalk

It gives you endless creative possibilities—there are no limits to what you can do with dry erase /white walls
If you’re a parent, you know how important it is for your children to be allowed to express themselves creatively and artistically. Imagine how content your child will be with a playroom or bedroom with an area he or she can write and draw on. Kids can create artwork, learn, and play

Chalkboard paint

Create a fun, functional chalkboard in any room of your home with paint that is erasable, washable, and durable enough to stand up to lots of little hands.

When you have chosen the area you would like to have your chalkboard
Using painters tape to mark off a desired shape for your chalkboard, and apply Chalkboard paint within the taped-off area.
You could use a decorative frame border to give your chalkboard space an extra personal touch.
· In children's rooms, be sure to make your chalkboard low and large enough so that younger children can reach and have ample space.
· In your office or study, paint a chalkboard, but remember a ledge for the chalk board erasers

Chalk boards have been widely replaced by plastic whiteboards, (we will have info on white boards in another topic) Still the old-fashioned chalkboard has its charm, and a hand-made one-of-a-kind chalkboard is certainly more of a decorating statement

Chalkboard paint will adhere to many surfaces; that allows you to create a chalkboard anywhere!

1. Smooth surfaces make the best chalkboards, so be sure to sand first, if the surface you want to paint is rough.
2. Clean the surface before painting to remove any grit or loose material.
3. Use paint tape to outline the boundary of the chalkboard. Press tape down firmly, over entire length, to ensure a crisp border.
4. If the surface is porous use primer first.
5. Apply the chalkboard paint evenly, with a sponge brush. Or foam roller
6. You may need to apply several coats. It is best to wait 24 hours before re-coating.

Fancy Framed Chalkboards
If you have any old framed pictures, put them to good
You can even use old frames that are empty. Paint a square of chalkboard onto the wall, just slightly larger than the open area within the frame. Then, after the paint dries and the tape is removed, securely mount your frame to the wall.
Cupboard and Pantry Doors
Paint the inside of a cupboard or pantry door with chalkboard paint. You can paint the entire surface, or if the door has a border, just paint the center section.
This is a good place to write down household reminders
